Martin Suters Vater war ein promovierter Ingenieurwissenschaftler und arbeitete als leitender Angestellter in der Foto- und Filmchemie, seine Mutter war im kaufmännischen Bereich tätig.

Suter wuchs mit zwei Geschwistern in Zürich und Fribourg auf [1]. Parallel dazu hat er immer auch geschrieben, unter anderem Reportagen für die Zeitschrift Geo sowie zahlreiche Drehbücher für Film und Fernsehen.

This is a good book but not one of Suter's strongest. The plot is solid, but similar to an uber-fancy dish in a posh restaurant a bit too contrived for my taste.

Suter mixes politics and current affairs i. While this goes down very nicely it does not leave a strong impression and the vague ending stands in stark contrast to some very detailed descriptions.

Maybe that's w I'd rate 2,5 stars if possible. Maybe that's why I believe this has potential as a film script - more showing, less describing.

I suspect the level of detail Suter goes into when it comes to food preparation, cooking methods and ingredients will bore some readers but they also make this novel a suitable gift for hobby cooks and chefs.

There's even a recipe section at the end. It was easy to read, undemanding and entertaining. The book sets off with a number of trails: a Tamil chef restricted to working as kitchen washer-upper, a beautiful Swiss I think creative waitress and a quintessential Swiss go-between.

A marvellous tale of a chef from wartorn Kasmir who settles in Brussels, but has to wash dishes instead of cook.

He is far better than the chefs in the restaurant, but gets himself fired. I expected a happy ending, but didn't really get one, but it is an interesting journey in the life of a refugee with complicated relationships back home and in his new life.

Knowing that this was a translation, I was prepared to notice and try to be patient. But just like Haufaura that I read earlier this year, it was a seamless unnoticeable thing.

Good fast paced novel. I really enjoyed reading this book - my first full German language novel!! I liked the sensitivity to the challenge of the main character trying to fit into his new environment without losing the identity of his old.

There seemed to be too many different stories and ideas all pressed into one book, political aspects alongside sexual problems, gay couples and immigrants in Switzerland.

Suter greatly combines an exciting plot with very sensual culinary parts and historical facts. The story isn't very deep, but I couldn't stop myself from reading.

The characters are nicely portrayed and quite likeable. All in all a great read. Reading Martin Suter is like coming home.

His language sounds familiar, and so do the locations. A book that plays in kitchens and is all about food has a similar effect on me.

Like other of his books this one begins with different storys that seam to have nothing in common. With time they develop into one big finish which was acutally a little anticlimactic in my opinion I feel like the book ends too soon.

It kinda just ends after one big thing happens and he gives two little scenes where the main characteres are set but the rest and it's a big rest!

All in all: you have to like this kind of book to enjoy it. Sometimes it feels like not a lot is happening but I just enjoy he's writing and how he brings storylines together!

The story is consistent and interesting. Suter mixes elements of noir with many elements of politics, modern economy profiteers, international geopolitics, etc.

The result is a pleasant story with some doses of social attitude and a bit of Western self-flagelation.

Suter will not revolutionise modern literature, but is a sure asset when you want to have a good moment. I can't really say I liked this book.

Apart from Maravan there was no character that really drew me in, even though I thought that Andrea was intriguing and very well written.

Still I really loved reading about Maravan's cooking techniques. I would love to try one of his meals. Also it was really a great way to read about political affairs like arms deals that I have next to no idea about.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It was decent, and I definitely wanted to find out what happened at the end, but I didnt find the story overly memorable.

I feel like this was a great story but maybe lacking just a little depth. I loved how all the threads came together, but the story wasn't as high octane as the blurb lead me to believe.

Not to say it wasn't a good ending, but it felt like it was wrapped up too quickly and it was maybe a little too predictable.

A plot with different views and topics. Some are very detailed and long as kitchen stuff or Tamil happenings others too short.

Not really the best book but if you are looking for something to read in between this might be ok. This was a very interesting and strange book and I enjoyed reading it.

Sex-therapy and then involvement in gun-running and intrigue. So-so sort of book. Liked it. Aside from the disappointing, underwhelming ending, this is classic Suter, easy to read, sucks you in quickly, never boring even when he describes countless Sri Lanka cooking recipes.

Overall it's a good story but from time to time a think it's too shallow! One night he cooks a traditional Indian dinner for his Swiss colleague Andrea who more or less invited herself to teach the other cooks and waiters in the restaurant a lesson.

Later she figures out that it had to do with the dishes that the Tamil cook served her. She asks him to prepare the same aphrodisiac meal again for her and a friend who so far resisted all her advances.

He agrees and Andrea is delighted with the success. Meanwhile Maravan lost his job in the restaurant and struggles to make ends meet with the unemployment benefits.

Then Andrea suggests that they team up and start their own business, a catering company called Love Food. Hesitatingly Maravan plunges into the adventure because he needs more money to support his family in Sri Lanka.

The special qualities of his cooking get round and attract new customers. Love Food slowly slips into the abyss of politics and dirty business.

Before soon Maravan and Andrea are confronted with questions of moral and responsibility that are closely associated not just with their business, but also with their private and family lives.

The language of The Chef is simple and humorous. At first glance it seems to be a light story about two people who start a love business of an innocent kind, but in reality Martin Suter touches on many serious topics in his novel and he starts with it right on the first page.

So much fun. Why me?? I just did one wrong move while I was training in the swimming pool…and again I heard this noise of my tendon.

Now I have to start all over again from zero. No surfing for me all summer. Right before my yearly winter surf trip I just wanted to train to get fit for the season.
